LAVA VBC CLINICS
As part of club dues LAVA players will be able to attend skill specific clinics throughout the season. These clinics are run by
Coach Brian Smith - Head Coach at Millersville University and Players from the Millersville Volleyball Team.
CORE VALUE
The core of value of LAVA centers around passion. We are intensely passionate about coaching volleyball and wish to pass on our love for the game. We will do this by establishing a nurturing learning environment, a positive, fun, yet intense team culture, and challenge each player beyond personal comfort zones to achieve something extraordinary.
Expectations of Parents
Support the coach in all decisions.
No matter what approach they take, the coaches do care and they are teaching your child. They take their responsibility very seriously and want each player, as well as the team, to be successful. A parent typically focuses on how a coaching decision affects their child; however, a coach has the interests of both the individual and the team at heart. Parents and players need to evaluate their experience in the context of a season of practices and competitions and not on a match by match basis. This is a developmental club so participation is valued.
Leave the coaching to the coach.
Spectator enthusiasm is often prone to issuing instructions to the players that may be contrary to those of the coach or at the very least prevent the player from hearing the coach. Please let the athletes play to the best of their ability and leave what coaching is needed to the coach on the bench. Please do cheer and encourage the actions you like and ignore the mistakes you will surely see. Please do not interfere with your childs coach, especially during play, or do anything else that will detract from the enjoyment your child deserves to get from volleyball. We’ve also learned that if you have comments on your childs’ play, no matter how constructive, they are best left until at least an hour after the match has ended when they will be seen as useful and not critical.
Communication
As the players are growing not only as athletes, but as young adults, we want to encourage them to begin advocating for themselves when they have questions. For this reason all player/ Coach/ Parent communication, in the form of a complaint or concern, must follow the following chain of command:
• FIRST STEP: Player approaches coach with concerns during practice or tournament times. This should be done in a respectful, positive manner.
• SECOND STEP: If needs were not addressed or met, player and parent discuss concerns with the coach. An appointment must be made to hold this meeting, and it will NOT be after a tournament or on the day of a tournament.
• THIRD STEP: If after the player, coach, and parent(s) cannot come to some kind of agreement, the coach will bring the issue to a Club Director.
It is important to remember that parents should NOT be contacting board personnel and coaches without first asking their daughter to discuss their concerns with their coach. While the volunteer board and staff of LAVA want to be approachable, we also want to support our desire to promote the maturity of our young athletes by learning to communicate with their adult coach.
Playing Time Guidelines
Our vision states that we will develop all players. For this reason, coaches are asked to choose a play-time structure that maximizes the amount of touches for each athlete while still remaining as competitive as possible.
Players may be seated for negative attitudes in practice or tournament play along with missing or showing a lack of effort in practice. All of which may cause them to lose court time.
It is our goal, that at the end of the day, players will have played an adequate amount of time in relation to their position. Please do not assume that each player will play the exact amount of games at the end of the day. Based on a player’s position, they may play more or less than others. Players will have similar playing time by position, and even this cannot always be guaranteed, but coaches do work hard to do the best they can based on their team formation.
